The breakdown of deleterious materials below the ground can produce gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and carbon monoxide (amongst others) which, if allowed to accumulate can pose a risk of asphyxiation or explosion to new developments and their users.

Sources of hazardous ground gases include landfill sites, deep areas of Made Ground, coal bearing strata or organic rich soils such as peat.  In order to determine the level or risk posed by these sources, Tier can install wells within boreholes and measure the concentrations of ground gases over specific time periods and atmospheric pressures.
