Soakaway testing may not be suitable on sites which are still in use; however, soil infiltration rates are still required for SuDs design.

In these cases, it may be preferable to undertake a falling or variable head test which involves adding water to a borehole during the drilling process and measuring the rate of outflow.  Tier Environmental can provide these tests in strict accordance with current standards.

The falling head permeability test involves flow of water through the base of a borehole which provides the water head and also allows measuring the volume of water passing through the soil below. The diameter of the borehole depends on the permeability of the tested soil.

The test can be carried out in many types of borehole and offers a cleaner and safer alternative to the BRE 365 soakaway.
